Challenge Response Anti-SPAM systems

I am an email user and a email provider, and I hate spam.  No, worse than that, I lothe SPAM…for many reasons.  There are many reasons, most that have been said before, and a lot from an ISP poitn of view (did you know spammers, hijack legit servers to send spam).  One of the “tools” that people have turned to is Challenge/Response system (where you, the sender, get an email that you have to “approve” that you sent it).  I hate these systems, and just for the record, I will NEVER respond to them.  It’s annoying and frustrating to have to send these back, and I have noticed that I have to “re-send” to verify, and sometimes the user doesn’t get them anyway.  *sigh*

Texas A&M University is horrible

I make it no secret that I don’t approve of college sports (as they are today). There are lots of reasons, which I’ll go into later. However, my wife is a big college sports fan (particually, she’s a big corn husker) and Nebraska was playing up at Texas A&M so we went up.

The Texas A&M team is a disgrace to the game of baseball, and the Texas A&M fans were a disgusting. So, here is what happen.

Don’t Use Spanning Sync

Holy Crap!

So, I decided to give spanning sync a try, I agree with Alex about the whole “server” thing, but that’s a topic for another discussion. Well, I made a freaking big discovery this morning, I found that spanning sync makes all your calendar entries PUBLIC!! Holy, crap!! Very Bad.

Here’s how to fix this:

1. Download your iCal to your desktop.

2. Open the file in your favorite text editor

3. Do a find and replace for PUBLIC and replace with PRIVATE.

4. Do an import back into gCal.

UPDATE: Charlie Wood (from spanningsync.com) has posted a comment to this post with his full contact information, I will post an update on this “bug” as soon as I talk with him.

Volunteer Webmaster

I’m a volunteer webmaster for a rather large organization (I’m not going to say which, but a VERY large one), and I have to say, I am learning that people don’t seem to get that it is a volunteer position, and some people are the most rudest, obnoxious people I have ever encountered, especially for this type of organization.

It shocks me that people act like this. Yes, I love to get publicly berated because I haven’t posted on the website in what you feel it should be. Sometimes people suck. There is a total non-understanding that this is an unpaid position, and I have to make a living and I have a life.

Dish Network Problems

Well, as I was watching TV (yes, I found something on TV), it turns out that my satellite dish just crapped out…bummer. It started out just a few channels, then a few more, and finally, all channels are dead. So, after calling DishNetwork tech support, I was told they could get a tech out on Monday the 4th (that’s 1 week). Totally unacceptable! Well, it looks like it is back to cable for me.

Nothing on TV

I have 300+ channels to choose from with DishNetwork, and there is nothing on TV…quite annoying.

Doctor Review: Michelle Irvin

I would just like to take a moment to comment on Doctors. There are a few industries that could care less about customer service (more on this later). Specifically, I would like to address doctors, I’m sure there are some great doctors out there…however, I guess I’m not meeting them. Case in point, Dr. Michelle Irvin in Round Rock, TX. By far one of the worst doctors I have ever met… Read more »

Well, I haven’t checked the comments moderation lately. 734 comments, 1 valid one. Nice.

[update] SPAM Karma installed…heh :)

[update] Heh, it works. SK2 has caught it all. Heh!!

Microsoft CEO calls me a “thief”

Steve Balmer (CEO of Microsoft) has stated that most music on iPods are “stolen”. Check out the article.

I’m an iPod owner, all my musics come from 2 sources:

1. iTunes Music Store (legal)

2. CD’s I already own (legal)

So, let’s see…yep, both legal…

All my friends who have iPods…they come from the following 2 sources:

1. iTunes Music Store (legal)

2. CD’s I already own (legal)

So, let’s see…yep, their both legal too…

so how am I (and my friends) a thief? Microsoft is over Mac’s and Linux are taking over…this is just another pathetic attempt to use FUD to gain back customers. It’s sad really.

Ummm…I think that we’ve gone too far…

Okay, I’m all for homeland security…but, ummm…I think that we have taken it a little too far…
